Winter Running Clothing Tips

Alright So Winter is here and there's no fighting it.

Some runners embrace the cold winter month's as a challenge from mother earth while others curse it's name and mutter under their breath with every trudging step they make through the snow caked sidewalks. Hate it or love it, you're going to need to be prepared for it. Here are some Tips to help you run better this winter.

1. Run a little cold.

Many novice runners make the mistake of trying to be too warm when they run. The problem with this is that inevitably you're going to warm up during your run and often times you will begin to sweat. Wet clothing can absolutely ruin your run. Avoid this by being just a little bit cold when you walk out the door. You'll warm up and be comfortable within a few minutes.

2. Use Layers

Avoid single bulky items like winter jackets or snow pants. They will interfere with your stride and will often lead to chaffing and you getting to warm (see tip 1). It's best to use multiple thin layers with an outer protective shell if you wan't to keep comfortable, warm and dry while you're running.

3. Buy Winter Shoes

Your light summers shoes are not built for the winter. Getting shoes with a warm, protective, and breathable outer coating, such as Gore-Tex, in combination with a stiffer and more studded bottom is your best bet in the winter.
